Squawk 7500, 7600 and 7700

Recent squawk 7500, 7600 and 7700 alerts

Recent squawk 7500, 7600 and 7700 alerts are the emergency codes crews set on the transponder: unlawful interference, radio failure, and a general emergency. This page lists each one after ADS-B has seen it twice, with the aircraft photo and the place it was flying. What squawk 7700 means is the longer explanation. The same squawks can light a FlightAbove display at home.

The three codes on this page

What squawk 7500, 7600 and 7700 mean

All three codes mean the same thing in every country. 7500 is rare and grave. 7600 is a communications problem with a known procedure behind it. 7700 is the general emergency, and the one you are most likely to see.

7500

Unlawful interference

The crew is telling controllers the aircraft is under threat, including a hijack. A 7500 card names the flight, shows a photo of that aircraft when one is known, and places it on the map.

7600

Radio failure

The crew cannot talk to air traffic control on the radio. The aircraft can still fly. The card shows where it was when the code was reported, plus height and speed when the feed includes them.

7700

General emergency

Something is wrong and the crew wants priority. It covers every emergency that is not 7500 or 7600. The card names the flight, shows a photo when one is known, and places it on the map.

How the list is filled

Watched from the squawk feed, then posted

FlightAbove reads the public emergency squawk feed for 7500, 7600 and 7700. The first read is held back. The second read for the same aircraft and the same code publishes the card: the alert, a photo of the aircraft, and the location. Later reads update that card instead of adding a duplicate.

  • check_circle 7700 is included. It is the general emergency, and the code seen most often.
  • check_circle A quiet gap of about 45 minutes closes the episode.

On a display

The room can show it too

Mini, Altitude, Horizon, Connect and Cloud can light up for an emergency squawk and then follow that aircraft. You choose nearby or worldwide. Sleep hours can let only emergencies through.

Quick answers

Questions about recent squawk alerts

What is a squawk 7500 alert?

Squawk 7500 means unlawful interference, including a hijack. The crew sets that code so controllers know the aircraft is under threat. A card appears here only after ADS-B has reported 7500 twice for the same aircraft.

What is a squawk 7600 alert?

Squawk 7600 means radio failure. The crew cannot talk to air traffic control. The aircraft can still fly, and there is a published way to continue without the radio. FlightAbove lists it with the aircraft photo and the place it was flying.

What is a squawk 7700 alert?

Squawk 7700 is the general emergency. The crew wants priority because something is wrong, and it is the emergency code you are most likely to see. A card appears here after ADS-B has reported 7700 twice for the same aircraft, with the photo and the place.

How recent are these squawk alerts?

The page is filled from the live emergency squawk feed. A card is added after the same aircraft is seen on 7500, 7600 or 7700 twice. While that aircraft stays on the code, the card keeps its latest place, height and speed. A gap of about 45 minutes starts a new card.

Why does a squawk alert wait for two reads?

A single transponder read can be garbled. FlightAbove waits until 7500, 7600 or 7700 is seen twice before it puts a card on this page or shares it. One bad read does not become a public alert.

Is a listed squawk a confirmed emergency?

No. These cards are ADS-B reports of a transponder code. They are not a distress service, and they do not confirm what is happening on the aircraft. Crews and controllers handle the real event.

Where does the aircraft photo come from?

When the registration is known, FlightAbove looks up a photo of that airframe. The photographer is credited under the picture. If no photo is available yet, the card still shows the code, the flight and the place.

Can these alerts show on a display at home?

Yes. A FlightAbove display can light the screen for emergency squawks, including 7500, 7600 and 7700, then follow that aircraft on a map. You choose whether those alerts stay inside your range or cover the world.
